Clown Shoes

CLOWN SHOES BREWERY

“Something’s happening, and it involves clown shoes and beer.  Clown Shoes?  Very long story, but to condense it a group of us submitted the name to the Beer Advocate contest that resulted in The Wrath of Pecant.  Our submission didn’t crack the top 5.  This burned me up inside.  While driving one day the epiphany came: I could make my own Clown Shoes beer.  In no way did I expect to create a brand, figuring it would be one batch of beer for fun and then done.  But folks are digging the brews and a group of us are having a great time.  Clown Shoes has come to mean a lot to me on a lot of levels.  Clowns are questionable but the shoes make me laugh.  They remind me about humility and to find humor in life.  Our mission now is to produce beer without pretension while being free and a little crazy.”

GALACTICA: 91 Points

A tropical galaxy

A tropical galaxy

This IPA is available year-round in 12 oz. bottles.

Brewer’s Description: “Galactica, a hop staff wielding heroine, patrols in karate kick mode through the heavens. Her mission: cosmic combat to promote good beer. Dry hopped with Galaxy hops, a clean malt backbone enhances the dank and luscious IPA flavors.”

My Description: The description of the “hop staff wielding heroine” is super lame but the beer makes up for it. It begins with a good sized, off-white colored head that fades to a thin film that holds the whole way leaving behind a noticeable amount of lacing. The aroma is welcoming with an overall tropical presence and notes of citrus hops, pale malts, and hints of light fruits. Galactica is medium bodied with a moderate carbonation level and a dry finish. The flavor profile showcases the Galaxy hop nicely by delivering tropical fruit notes like pineapples and mangoes. There are also notes of pale malts, pine hops, citrus hops, and some caramel as well. The alcohol is nicely hidden and the aftertaste is moderately bitter with lingering resiny hop notes. This is a clean and enjoyable IPA. It is best served around 45°F and pairs nicely with Thai noodles, spicy shrimp tacos, or jerk chicken.

REXX: 91 Points

Barleywine-esque

Barleywine-esque

This American Strong/Imperial Red Ale is a limited release in 22 oz. bottles.

Brewer’s Description: “We like dinosaurs. We especially like Rexx, our prehistoric pal who wears clown shoes, drinks bourbon, and spends his doomed days in exile from the other Tyrannosauruses, choosing to romp with friendlier beasts. Rexx, we dedicate this Imperial Red Ale aged in Heaven Hill and Four Roses bourbon barrels to you buddy.”

My Description: This is a nicely executed beer that is fits correctly into the bourbon category. It begins with a good sized, light beige colored head that fades to a thin film that lingers leaving behind a minimal amount of lacing. The aroma is pleasant with notes of caramel malt, bourbon, and faint notes of vanilla. Rexx is medium/full bodied with a slightly lower carbonation level and a semi-dry finish. The texture is chewy like a barleywine but not as dense, it’s a bit thinner with the alcohol coming through slightly but not in an intrusive way. The flavor profile is similar to the nose with notes of caramel malt, bourbon, vanilla as well as a hint of molasses and some oak presence. This beer is definitely on the sweeter side with just a hint of bitterness in the finish. Overall, this beer is strong and enjoyable but needs some aging to take the edge off. It is best served around 55°F and pairs nicely with dark chocolate, strong cheeses, or a mild cigar.
