SPATEN

“Spaten has been a leading exporter of German beer for more than a century. We played a crucial role in establishing the present superior worldwide reputation for German beer. The basis of our continuously expanding export figures was a healthy pioneering spirit that led us to set up a network of committed import partners at an early date. Today people all over the world take pleasure in drinking original Spaten beers, not only in the neighbouring states of France, Austria and Switzerland, but also in Italy, Spain, Scandinavia and the United States.”

DUNKEL: 84 Points

Toasty Aroma

Toasty Aroma

This Dunkel Lager is available year-round in 12 oz. bottles.

Brewer’s Description: “Dark colored with rich malty flavor.”

My Description: This is a good lager choice when looking for a beer with more malt flavors on that cool brisk night. It begins with a good sized, light beige colored head that fades to a thin film but holds the whole way and leaves behind a decent amount of lacing. The aroma is the best part of the beer. It smells sweet and toasty with notes of biscuits, caramel, along with hints of dark fruit. This beer is medium bodied with a moderate carbonation level and a dry finish. Unfortunately, I feel that it smells better than it tastes. There are good flavors in this beer but they feel thin and the aftertaste does not satisfy. The flavor profile is dominated by malty notes like caramel and toasted bread accompanied by hints of tobacco. The bitterness is at a minimum and there is very little hop flavor notes. It is best served around 45°F and pairs nicely with roasted duck, lamb chops, or a light pizza.

OKTOBERFEST: 91 Points

Addicting Flavors

Addicting Flavors

Known as the world’s first Oktoberfest beer, this German style Märzen is released in early Autumn in 12 oz. bottles.

Brewer’s Description: “The beer of Munich’s famous Oktoberfest: aromatic, savoury, gold-colored.”

My Description: This is not the first Märzen ever produced but it is one of the finer demonstrations of the style. It begins with a large, off-white colored head with a great retention level and it leaves behind a nice amount of lacing. The aroma is clean, simple, and inviting with notes of noble hops and malt. This beer is roughly medium bodied with a moderate carbonation level and a dry finish. This beer has terrific balance and great drinkability. Upfront, there are notes of bread and malt accompanied by a hop spice flavor and a touch of roastiness. The aftertaste is minimally bitter and very clean. This is a great choice for the season and a six pack may not be enough. This is best served around 40°F and pairs nicely with grilled sausage, heavy salads, or steaks.

Optimum Doppelbock

Optimum Doppelbock

This Doppelbock is available year-round in 12 oz. bottles.

Brewer’s Description: “Bottom-fermented Dark Beer “Doppel Bock” with a deep dark color and a rich roasted malt flavor.”

My Description: This a very nice representation of the style; it is smooth, tasty, and filling. It begins with a good sized, beige colored head that lasts forever and leaves behind a noticeable amount of lacing. The aroma is pleasant with roasted malts taking center stage accompanied by notes of toffee, dark fruit, and a hint of nuttiness. Optimator is full bodied with a moderate carbonation level and a dry finish. The blend of flavors is really enjoyable with notes of roasted malts, molasses, bread, and a light dark fruit presence. The aftertaste is clean and minimally bitter.  The alcohol is felt slightly but overall it is hidden nicely. This tasty brew is best served around 45°F and pairs nicely with grilled sausage, BBQ duck, or chocolate cake.

PREMIUM LAGER: 87 Points

Fine German Lager

Fine German Lager

This Helles Lager is available year-round in 12 oz. bottles.

Brewer’s Description: “Sold as Münchner Hell in Germany, München in the UK and Premium in North America. This beer is our speciality. In 1894 Spaten became the first brewery in Munich to produce this brand of light lager. Golden in color with a well-balanced hop-flavor. The full rounded body is a superb balance between hops and a malty sweetness.”

My Description: Let’s see: Budweiser, Miller, Coors, Spaten. This is an easy decision when looking for a clean, high quality lager. It has a decent sized, white colored head that fades rather quickly but leaves behind a good amount of lacing. The aroma is clean and fresh with notes of grains, bread, and noble hops. This beer is light/medium bodied with a higher carbonation level and a dry finish. This beer is crisp, refreshing, and more on the bitter side. Spaten has a tasty malt backbone with notes of noble hops and a touch of lemon/citrus. The aftertaste is slightly bitter and thirst quenching. This is a great everyday beer for any occasion. It is best served around 40°F and pairs nicely with burgers, veggie pizzas, or grilled sausage.
