MAUI BREWING COMPANY
Maui Brewing Company, founded in 2005, brews their beer in Lahaina, Maui. Their beers are either available on draft or in aluminum cans. They choose cans to help keep the Hawaiian coastline free of broken glass and to eliminate light damage and the risk of oxidation.
COCONUT PORTER: 75 Points
A traditional porter with the addition of roasted coconuts. This brew uses Cascade and Columbus hops to produce an IBU of 30. Available year-round in 12 oz. cans.
Brewer’s Description: “Our Coconut Porter is a fresh handcrafted robust porter brewed with six varieties of malted barley, hops and hand-toasted coconut. It begins with a malty-toasted coconut aroma followed by a rich, silky feel with tastes of dark malt, chocolate and hints of coffee. It then finishes with flavors of toasted coconut and hoppy spice to balance the finish.”
My Description: This beer starts off with a sub-par head retention with minimal lacing. It has a pleasant coconut aroma with notes of roasted coffee. The first flavor you will encounter is roasted coffee and then some creaminess in the middle. This is followed by notes of coconut and slight bitterness in the aftertaste. You can also pick up the taste of alcohol if you hold this porter in your mouth for a few seconds. It’s enjoyable and welcoming to find some toasted coconut notes in the flavor of this porter but the initial quality of this beer holds its back. The flavors don’t seem refined and the texture is not very smooth. This is just not a porter that I would purchase again even though I enjoyed the coconut addition. I think the idea is great, but the beer is just average.

MANA WHEAT: 64 Points
This is an American wheat ale with an Hawaiian twist. The hop of choice is Hersbrucker and the IBU is 18. Available year-round in 12 oz. cans.
Brewer’s Description: “An unfiltered, freshly handcrafted American-style wheat ale infused with Maui Gold Pineapple. Our crisp and refreshing wheat ale is lightly hopped to allow the fruity sweetness of the pineapple to shine. The yeast stays in suspension making the ale traditionally cloudy.”
My Description: The beer has a weak and thin head that goes away completely after a few minutes. The aroma is mild with notes of pineapple. Once you drink this you will notice only a subtle taste of pineapple juice. This beer is light bodied and easy drinking but there is nothing remotely special about it. To me it is just plain and boring. I did not enjoy it, it did not feel of high quality and it wasn’t comparable to other flavored wheat beers. I don’t know why I would drink this instead of regular pineapple juice. If this is the best that pineapple beers get then I’m done with pineapple.
